The macOS Big Sur update is probably one of the most feature-rich updates that Apple has released recently for its macOS machines.
It carries several improvements and even brings one of the biggest UI overhauls to macOS, bringing it more in line with the UI offered on iOS 14.
Of course, a quick Google search will serve you dozens upon dozens of articles detailing all that’s new and the same goes with videos on YouTube.
But before getting excited about the new features and improvements, it’s also worth noting that, like most other software updates, the macOS Big Sur update also has its fair share of bugs and issues.
Take for example the bug we reported of earlier which prevents some MacBook users on Big Sur from booting their devices while connected to a monitor via Thunderbolt.
Now, another issue appears to be troubling many Mac users. After installing the macOS Big Sur (11) update, users are reporting that the printing function is now broken.
We’ve shared multiple reports from affected users below:
Printing went well on Catalina. Now printing stopped and showed message ‘Filter failed’. Using printer Lexmark C543 and removed and entered the printer once. Same problem. Printer supply is visible in browser. Seems to be OS problem. (Source)

I already updated the latest version MacOS Big Sur Beta 11.0 (20A5384c) but after updated i got some issue in printing the documents. In first beta update document printed but only pictures are printed no paragraph is printed. After second update my new printer HP Laser jet Pro M15a installed but not printing even no error showing. As you can see, the problem seems to be affecting users with all sorts of different printers. Therefore, it certainly cannot be pinned down to a certain printer model or even brand for that matter.
At present, the problem has not been acknowledged by Apple directly, although it does have a general fix for printing issues that we’ve shared below.
Furthermore, what seems to be the most likely issue is the printer drivers or rather, lack thereof, as highlighted by a user and a report.
I was able to print using a USB cable though, after downloading the latest driver and connecting to the printer via an old USB type 1 cable that I had around. Seems like Epson needs to update their driver software. (Source)
Most printer manufacturers are yet to release new drivers with support for macOS Big Sur. Therefore, it’s more than likely that most issues would be fixed once the updated drivers go live.
But until then, you might want to try these possible workarounds which may fix the problem for you.
Workarounds for printing issues on macOS Big Sur
1) Reset the Mac printing system (official fix):
1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Printers & Scanners.
2. Press and hold the Control key as you click in the list at the left, then choose “Reset printing system” from the menu that appears.
3. After you reset the printing system, the list of printers in Printers & Scanners preferences is empty.
4. Re-add any printers.
This should fix the issue for some users, however, there are chances that your printer might not work even after performing the steps above.
2) Download the open-source Gutenprint driver:
It seems that users have managed to fix the problem after downloading and installing the Gutenprint driver which is completely free. All you need to do is download the latest package from here and install it on your Mac computer.
3) Check for the latest drivers:
Make sure that you have the latest drivers for your printer installed on your Mac computer running macOS Big Sur. There’s a possibility that the current printer drivers aren’t supported on the latest OS.
Therefore, updating the drivers to the latest version might fix the issue for good. Most manufactures provide the drivers on their websites so you should be able to get your hands on the drivers within a few minutes.
That being said, we will continue to keep an eye out for any new developments regarding the broken printing function on macOS Big Sur and will post an update once new details emerge.

In latest 10.15 Catalina and macOS 11, Apple splits the startup disk into two separate volumes, System and Data. It makes data backup difficult especially those apps making (and restoring) bootable backups.
Therefore, it's always recommended to back Mac files up before every major macOS update using the built-in Time Machine.
If you upgraded to macOS Big Sur on a Mac that uses a Time Capsule or other network storage device as the backup destination, your existing backups are also upgraded and can be used only on macOS Big Sur. New backups that are created can be used only on macOS Big Sur.
If you are using a third-party software to back up, then you need to wait until it's ready for macOS 11.

2. Fail to download and install macOS Big Sur
macOS 11 fails to download with some messages like 'The network connection was lost', 'Installation failed', or 'there is not enough space'.
Can't download macOS Big Sur or take a too long time, what to do?
With a large size of over 12 GB, it might take a while to download macOS 11. However, if downloading the software takes time more than you expect (like hours), some things go wrong. In some cases, messages like 'macOS Big Sur download has failed' might cast a chill over you.
How to fix:
- Check your Internet connection (either an Ethernet or WiFi) and make sure it's fast and stable enough.
- Make sure the task of downloading macOS software update is working fine. Or you can restart your Mac and try it again.
- Make sure you have made enough room for the software on the target disk.
Can't install macOS Big Sur on Mac, why?
A successful macOS software update is not as easy as you think. After downloading, if macOS Big Sur won't install on your Mac machine, all your effort might be in vain. Your Mac may freeze on setting up your Mac, and some older MacBook Pro machines even get bricked by macOS Big Sur.
This could be a result of installing into the same APFS container as previous versions of macOS Catalina 10.15. Another possible reason for 'macOS Big Sur Cannot Be Installed On This Computer' is that macOS 11 simply is not compatible with your Mac (e.g. iMac 2020, Retina 5K, 27-inch).
How to fix:
- If you can't upgrade from macOS 10.15 Catalina to Big Sur, you need first update to 10.15.6 before installing macOS Big Sur.
- If your Mac is T2-secured, to install macOS Big Sur, you need to boot your Mac to macOS Recovery mode > Utilities > Startup Security Utility, and then make sure the Secure Boot option is NOT set to 'No Security'.
- If you fail to upgrade to macOS 11 Big Sur and receive 'an error occurred applying the software update', try restart with 'Command + R' or 'Command + Option + R', disable File Vault encryption, and then reinstall macOS in macOS Recovery Mode.
- If you fail to install the macOS software because the Mac goes sleep while preparing macOS Big Sur 11, you can simply adjust Energy Saver settings by Apple menu > System Preferences > Energy Saver and then try it again.
macOS Big Sur bricked some incomaptible Mac models
Another possible reason for 'macOS Big Sur Cannot Be Installed On This Computer' is that macOS 11 simply is not compatible with your Mac (e.g. iMac 2020, Retina 5K, 27-inch).
Make sure your Mac is in the list of compatible models. DO NOT install macOS Big Sur if you are using a MacBook Pro earlier than late 2013 and mid 2014. If it has already casued a problem, you need to reinstall macOS or downgrade the macOS to Catalina.
3. Startup issues after installing macOS Big Sur
After installing macOS Big Sur, the Mac will then automatically restart from the newly installed system. What comes along with is a repeated boot loop, restarting, black screen, and then loading macOS 11 Big Sur. But if any problems occur or any part of those gets stuck, the Mac fails to turn on.
You might see it stuck on the loading screen with an Apple logo, or return some symbols that you have never seen on your Mac, such as a flashing globe, a folder with question mark, pink screen of death, or a prohibitory icon. Finally, the macOS update just crashed and bricked your computer.
